The Ecology of Experimental
Music Performance in Canada

Sounds Provocative focuses on nine music festivals and three seasonal presenters across Canada, mapping the activities of musicians across local, regional, and national contexts. Festivals and presenters also bring Canadian musicians into contact with international musicians. By analysing performance in site-specific contexts, Sounds Provocative recognizes the influence of place, space, production, promotion, administration, technical support, reception, and documentation in the formation of musical, and by extension cultural, identities. The touchstone for Sounds Provocative is always how meaning is produced through particular musical performances.
